    Efficacy of a self-help manual in increasing resilience in carers of adults with depression in Thailand

    Caring for a person with a mental illness can have adverse effects on caregivers; however, little is known about how best to help such caregivers. The aim of the present study was to examine the efficacy of a cognitive behaviour therapy-guided self-help manual in increasing resilience in caregivers of individuals with depression, in comparison to caregivers who receive routine support only. A randomized, controlled trial was conducted, following CONSORT guidelines, with 54 caregivers allocated to parallel intervention (self-help manual) (n = 27) or control (standard support) (n = 27) groups. Resilience was assessed at baseline, post-test (week 8), and follow up (week 12). Intention-to-treat analyses were undertaken. Repeated-measures ANOVA indicated a significant difference in resilience scores between the three time points, showing a large effect. Pairwise comparisons between intervention and control groups indicated resilience to be significantly different between baseline and post-test, and between baseline and follow up, but not between post-test and follow up. Overall, the intervention group showed a slightly greater increase in resilience over time than the control group; however, the time–group interaction was not significant. Guided self-help is helpful in improving caregivers’ resilience and could be used as an adjunct to the limited support provided to carers by mental health nurses and other clinicians

    Acute stress differentially affects spatial configuration learning in high and low cortisol-responding healthy adults

    Background: Stress and stress hormones modulate memory formation in various ways that are relevant to our understanding of stress-related psychopathology, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Particular relevance is attributed to efficient memory formation sustained by the hippocampus and parahippocampus. This process is thought to reduce the occurrence of intrusions and flashbacks following trauma, but may be negatively affected by acute stress. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that the efficiency of visuo-spatial processing and learning based on the hippocampal area is related to PTSD symptoms. Objective: The current study investigated the effect of acute stress on spatial configuration learning using a spatial contextual cueing task (SCCT) known to heavily rely on structures in the parahippocampus. Method: Acute stress was induced by subjecting participants (N = 34) to the Maastricht Acute Stress Test (MAST). Following a counterbalanced within-subject approach, the effects of stress and the ensuing hormonal (i.e., cortisol) activity on subsequent SCCT performance were compared to SCCT performance following a no-stress control condition. Results: Acute stress did not impact SCCT learning overall, but opposing effects emerged for high versus low cortisol responders to the MAST. Learning scores following stress were reduced in low cortisol responders, while high cortisol-responding participants showed improved learning. Conclusions: The effects of stress on spatial configuration learning were moderated by the magnitude of endogenous cortisol secretion. These findings suggest a possible mechanism by which cortisol responses serve an adaptive function during stress and trauma, and this may prove to be a promising route for future research in this area

    Revisit Sparse Polynomial Interpolation based on Randomized Kronecker Substitution

    In this paper, a new reduction based interpolation algorithm for black-box multivariate polynomials over finite fields is given. The method is based on two main ingredients. A new Monte Carlo method is given to reduce black-box multivariate polynomial interpolation to black-box univariate polynomial interpolation over any ring. The reduction algorithm leads to multivariate interpolation algorithms with better or the same complexities most cases when combining with various univariate interpolation algorithms. We also propose a modified univariate Ben-or and Tiwarri algorithm over the finite field, which has better total complexity than the Lagrange interpolation algorithm. Combining our reduction method and the modified univariate Ben-or and Tiwarri algorithm, we give a Monte Carlo multivariate interpolation algorithm, which has better total complexity in most cases for sparse interpolation of black-box polynomial over finite fields

    An Exploratory Approach to Analyzing Alcohol Control Policy Opinions Held by Ontario Adults

    Telephone interview data from a representative sample of 1,216 Ontario adults were analyzed using latent class analysis to determine whether distinct and homogeneous classes of individuals could be identified based on their responding patterns to 11 alcohol policy items. Five latent classes were identified and labeled as: dedicated liberalizers, moderate liberalizers, moderate controllers, dedicated controllers, and an ambivalent class. Multinomial regression analysis indicated that demographic and alcohol factors differentiated the classes. Those most opposed to alcohol controls, dedicated liberalizers, were more likely to be male, younger and heavier drinkers. Given their young age it is possible that further erosion of public support for alcohol controls may be expected

    Single-trial classification of neural responses evoked in rapid serial visual presentation: Effects of stimulus onset asynchrony and stimulus repetition

    Abstract-Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) tasks, in which participants are presented with a continuous sequence of images in one location, have been used in combination with electroencephalography (EEG) in a variety of Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) applications. The RSVP task is advantageous because it can be performed at a high temporal rate. The rate of the RSVP sequence is controlled by the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between subsequent stimuli. When used within the context of a BMI, an RSVP task with short SOA could increase the information throughput of the system while also allowing for stimulus repetitions. However, reducing the SOA also increases the perceptual degradation caused by presenting two stimuli in close succession, and it decreases the target-to-target interval (TTI), which can increase the cognitive demands of the task. These negative consequences of decreasing the SOA could affect on the EEG signal measured in the task and degrade the performance of the BMI. Here we systematically investigate the effects of SOA and stimulus repetition (r) on single-trial target detection in an RSVP task. Ten healthy volunteers participated in an RSVP task in four conditions that varied in SOA and repetitions (SOA=500 ms, r=1; SOA=250 ms, r=2; SOA=166 ms, r=3; and SOA=100 ms, r=5) while processing time across conditions was controlled. There were two key results: First, when controlling for the number of repetitions, single-trial performance increases when the SOA decreases. Second, when the repetitions were combined, the best performance (AUC=0.967) was obtained with the shortest SOA (100 ms). These results suggest that shortening the SOA in an RSVP task has the benefit of increasing the performance relative to longer SOAs, and it also allows a higher number of repetitions of the stimuli in a limited amount of time

    Vapor-fed electrolysis of water has been performed using membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) incorporating earth-abundant catalysts and bipolar membranes (BPMs). Catalyst films containing CoP nanoparticles, carbon black, and Nafion were synthesized, characterized, and integrated into cathodes of MEAs. The CoP-containing MEAs exhibited stable (>16 h) vapor-fed electrolysis of water at room temperature at a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² with 350 mV of additional overvoltage relative to MEA's formed from Pt/C cathodic electrocatalysts due to slower hydrogen-evolution reaction kinetics under vapor-fed conditions and fewer available triple-phase boundaries in the catalyst film. Additionally, catalyst films containing a [NiFe]-layered double hydroxide ([NiFe]-LDH) as well as a hydroxide ion conductor, hexamethyl-p-terphenyl poly(benzimidazolium) (HMT-PMBI), were synthesized, characterized, and integrated into the anodes of the MEAs. The [NiFe]-LDH-containing MEAs exhibited overvoltages at 10 mA cm⁻² that were similar to those of IrO_x-containing MEAs for vapor-fed electrolysis of water at room temperature. A BPM was formed by pairing Nafion with HMT-PMBI, resulting in a locally alkaline environment of HMT-PMBI to stabilize the [NiFe]-LDH and a locally acidic environment to stabilize the CoP. BPM-based MEAs were stable (>16 h) for vapor-fed electrolysis of water at room temperature at a current density of 10 mA cm⁻², with a change in the pH gradient of 1 unit over 16 h of electrolysis for IrOx-containing MEAs. The stability of [NiFe]-LDH-based MEAs under vapor-fed conditions was dependent on the catalyst film morphology and resulting BPM interface, with stable operation at 10 mA cm⁻² achieved for 16 h. All MEAs exhibited a drift in the operating voltage over time associated with dehydration. These results demonstrate that earth-abundant catalysts and BPMs can be incorporated into stable, room-temperature, vapor-fed water-splitting cells operated at 10 mA cm⁻²
